21st CCLC Budget Guidelines

The Pennsylvania Department of Education, in cooperation with the Center for Schools and Communities provided a live, online session entitled "21st CCLC Budget Guidelines". The presenter will be Susan D'Annunzio, Student Services Supervisor, Bureau of Community and Student Services, Division of Student Services and Migrant Education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The purpose of this presentation was to provide participants with a guideline to assist them in preparing their 21st Century Community Learning Center budget, including what is allowable, what requires specific detail and that which is prohibited.

Being T.R.U.U.E. – Strategies for Engaging and Empowering Students from Underrepresented and Underserved Populations to Succeed in School

This session was originally delivered on May 12, 2009. The Pennsylvania Department of Education in partnership with the Center for Schools and Communities, held on live, online session entitled, Being T.R.U.U.E. – Strategies for Engaging and Empowering Students from Underrepresented and Underserved Populations to Succeed in School. The presenter was Carlos Ojeda, Jr. who serves as President and CEO of Carlos Ojeda Jr., Inc. 

This workshop was designed to share strategies aimed to engage and empower underrepresented and underserved students for greater success in school. Participants examined strategies that helped one university increased its incoming class of multicultural students - raising the level of participation from 4.9% to 16.1% in three years. Participants also learned how this innovative approach is being utilized by a national student leadership program with outstanding success. Participants were informed how to implement “Being T.R.U.U.E.” techniques on a local level to increase participation among underserved students and further advance academic learning of children within the public school system. 

The presenter, Carlos Ojeda Jr. received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management with a Minor in Marketing from Bloomsburg University. He also earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration focusing on business development, entrepreneurship and organization development from Kutztown University. He is a member of the National Society of Hispanic MBA’s and has served on the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition. 

This professional development opportunity was offered to 21st Century Community Learning Center program staff, as well as coordinators and program personnel of academic and enrichment initiatives held before and/or after the school bell rings.

The following workshop objectives were established for this session:

  • Participants will understand how to address issues of underserved children and families;
  • Participants will learn targeted strategies to engage and empower underserved children;
  • Participants will learn national strategies proven effective for helping children succeed in school.

Building School Support for Afterschool: Marketing and Collaborating with Schools and Communities

The Pennsylvania Department of Education, in cooperation with the Center for Schools and Communities, provided a live, online session entitled, “Building School Support for Afterschool: Marketing and Collaborating with Schools and Communities”. The presenters were Lorri Bland and Malinda Bostick, from Erie School District’s CHAMPS Afterschool Program. The purpose of this presentation was to provide participants with information about how afterschool programs can create partnerships with schools and communities to build their capacity and effectiveness.

Have You Thought About Getting a Child Care License?

The Center for Schools and Communities conducted a live, online session entitled “Have You Thought About Getting a Child Care License?” The presenter was Jennifer R. Lau, Director at the Bureau of Certification Services in the Office of Child Development and Early Learning.

The purpose of this presentation was to provide participants with information about the requirements for getting a Child Care License and the steps involved in opening and operating a child care center.

21st CCLC Grantee Participation in the PPICS Pilot Program on Student Data Collection

On Tuesday, September 9, 2008, The Pennsylvania Department of Education, in cooperation with the Center for Schools and Communities, provided a required live, online training entitled 21st CCLC Grantee Participation in the PPICS Pilot Program on Student Data Collection.

The presenters were Susan W. D'Annunzio, Student Services Supervisor, Pennsylvania Department of Education and Neil Naftzger, Senior Research Associate Afterschool Programming, Learning Point Associates.

The purpose of the presentation was to help grantees understand how to use the new Profile and Performance Information Collection System (PPICS) pilot system.

Family-School-Community Partnerships: Powerful Support for Student Success

On Wednesday, August 27, 2008, The Pennsylvania Departments of Education and Public Welfare, in partnership with the Center for Schools and Communities, offered a one-hour, live, online professional development opportunity entitled, “Family-School-Community Partnerships: Powerful Support for Student Success” with presenter Karen Shanoski, Family-School-Community Partnership Project Manager with the Pennsylvania Parent Information and Resource Center (PA PIRC).

The session provided ways that families can be effectively engaged with their child’s education and how family-school-community partnerships create a powerful support for student success.

The presenter, Karen Shanoski, is a Family-School-Community Partnership Project Manager with the PA PIRC. Her current work focuses on family-school-community partnerships with an emphasis on effective family engagement. Ms. Shanoski is the recent recipient of the prestigious 2008 Patrick F. Toole Kudos Award, an annual award that recognizes a full-time Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit staff member for achievement, dedication and service to schools, children and the community at large.

Completing the Pennsylvania 21st CCLC Grantee Report

On Thursday, June 26, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, in collaboration with the Center for Schools and Communities, offered an online training session entitled "Completing the Pennsylvania 21st CCLC Grantee Report." Presenters were Yolanda Yugar, Evaluation Specialist, and Leslie Kirby, Grants and Evaluation, from Allegheny Intermediate Unit #3.

In this live, online training session, the 21st Century state evaluators from Allegheny Intermediate Unit presented the Pennsylvania 21st CCLC Grantee Report for the 2007-2008 program year. Evaluators also reviewed the content of the report and provide guidance to grantees for navigating the new reporting system. Grantees were given an opportunity to ask questions about the report and how it applies to their program.

Planning for Evaluation of 21st CCLC Programs: Evaluation Handbook and Resources

On Friday, June 13, The Pennsylvania Department of Education, in collaboration with the Center for Schools and Communities, hosted an online training session entitled "Planning for Evaluation of 21st CCLC Programs: Evaluation Handbook and Resources." Presenters were Yolanda Yugar, Evaluation Specialist, and Leslie Kirby, Grants and Evaluation, from Allegheny Intermediate Unit #3.

In this online training, the 21st Century state evaluators reviewed the 07-08 program year evaluation requirements, including an overview of the content of the PPICS and state reporting systems. Evaluators reviewed in detail a number of tools and resources they created for grantees that will increase grantee capacity to manage and organize data needed for effective program implementation and reporting. This included the 21st CCLC Evaluation Handbook, 21st CCLC Survey Builder, spreadsheet tools, and data protection templates.
