High School Afterschool Programming

Evidence Based Academic Enrichment: What Works?
On April 26, 2006, Dr. Cynthia Belliveau, Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance, presented Evidence Based Academic Enrichment: What Works? at the 21st CCLC Coordinators’ Training. 21st Century 101
On April 26, 2006 in Grantville, PA, Dorothy Hershey, Pennsylvania Department of Education; Shileste Morris, Center for Schools and Communities and Faith Goldstein, Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance, presented 21st Century 101 at the 21st CCLC Coordinators’ Training. Afterschool Advocacy
On April 18, 2006, Molly Philbin, The Earthbox, provided an overview of the current state of afterschool and upcoming afterschool advocacy opportunities. Learn how to make a difference and become more engaged in advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels to help ensure that all kids have access to quality afterschool programs. Developing a Theory of Change and Strategic Plan
On April 4, 2006, Shileste Morris, Youth Development Program Manager, Center for Schools and Communities and Kisha Bird, Director Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development examined tools to guide the development of a strategic plan that includes identifying performance measures and the benefits/challenges of sustainability planning. Staff Retention in Afterschool
On March 7, 2006, Jennifer Buher, Senior Research Coordinator, Out-of-School-Time Resource Center, presented a workshop on Staff Retention in Afterschool. Afterschool programs lose two out of every five of their staff to turnover, creating a constant pressure to recruit, hire, and train new workers. Turnover also presents a barrier to quality, making it that much more difficult for programs to ensure stable, top-notch care and enrichment for the young people they serve. Afterschool Technology Resources
On February 28, 2006, Jon Zemanek, Digital Divide Coordinator, Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance familiarized the participants with various replicable and sustainable technology programs appropriate for both students and parents in a 21st Century Community Learning Center environment. Highlighted programs will include the Digital Miracles Project (computer repair and refurbishing), Technology Student Association (technology project-based learning and career exploration), and International Computer Driver's License (computer literacy). SAFARIS EarthBoxes Afterschool Program
On January 24, 2006, Molly Philbin, The Earthbox, presented the SAFARIS EarthBoxes Afterschool Program. The SAFARIS program conducts service-learning projects that utilize EarthBoxes. EarthBoxes also has a standards-based curriculum that can be used in daytime classes and after school projects. The standards addressed are in Science, Math and Language Arts and Consumer Science with an emphasis on nutrition.

Advisory Boards
On October 27, 2005, Dr.Cynthia Belliveau, Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance,Dr.Cynthia Belliveau, Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance, led through a series of experiences which gave comprehensive list of candidates for an 'ideal board.’ Specific emphasis will be placed on how to effectively involve young people and parents with the 21st CCLC board. On October 25, 2005, Margit Myers ,Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance, provided resources for creating effective after-school programs, including information and grant-writing assistance for funding opportunities, national and regional resources, and ideas for strengthening the ties between the traditional school day and after-school programs. Lights On Afterschool!
On October 11, 2005, Dr. Cynthia Belliveau, Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance, presented a powerpoint which brought attention to the need for programs that keep kids safe, support working families, and improve academic achievement.
